Common Assessment in Writing with Leveled supports
Common Assessments in the domain of writing were developed by Somerville teachers of English Learners in order to establish shared benchmarks of progress towards English Proficiency. ELL Common Assessments are integrated into district Literacy Units of Study and should be administered with students at the end of the unit of as an independent task. Supports for students are embedded in the ELL Common Assessments and aligned to WIDA Levels. When determining which level of supports to provide for each student, teachers should consider the principle of "leveling up", so that ELL students have every opportunity to show what they CAN DO.
